Artistry and Innovation in Pittsburgh Glass, 1808-1882: From Bakewell & Ensell to Bakewell, Pears & Co.

Before the production of steel made Pittsburgh an international industrial center in the twentieth century, glass manufacturing flourished in the city where rivers and plentiful raw materials were well suited to its production and marketing.

This catalog charts the genesis, growth, and influence of this enterprising nineteenth-century manufacturer.  This first comprehensive survey of Bakewell glass emphasizes table and ornamental glass that is free-blown, mold-blown, and pressed.
